BOARD MEMBER REPLACEMENT DELAYED.
Claudine Cooper Goree, 59, died of breast cancer June 24. She was buried Monday in
Walker Cemetery in Carthage.

"I think out of respect for her, we have not discussed what to do about Mrs. Goree's
position," Hambrick said. The board meets July 15.

Goree had served on the board of trustees since 2003 but was unable to attend recent
meetings because of her illness. She was vice president of the board.

Because Goree was starting a new term, the board has 180 days under state law to either
appoint a replacement or call another election to fill the seat, Hambrick said.

"If people who lived in her district are interested in running for her position, they can
contact my office," he said. "That way, if we decided to have an election, I could forward
that information to my board."

Goree's daughter, Rachael, said her mother cared for everyone.

"I think that was one of her greatest assets and her downfalls," she said. "Her whole life
has been doing for other people ... She would call us and tell us about children in
Carthage we didn't even know. It was important for her to see every child succeed."

Former Carthage school board President Ken Andrus spoke on behalf of the board during
Goree's funeral.

"She was truly devoted to the students and faculty of CISD," Andrus said.
"I could count on her ... She was a great lady, and we'll truly miss her on the board."

Andrus said Goree supported all the students in district, whether attending athletic events
or choir and band concerts.

He added that Goree even made an appearance at the Carthage High School's May
graduation.

"She handed out a number of diplomas to her special kids," Andrus said. "She was a lady
that had the best interest of all the kids, not just a select few."
